BMW drives up commitment for battery cells

A second German car manufacturer is forcing its investments in electric mobility. After the Volkswagen Group, which is fully committed to battery electric drives under Herbert Diess, BMW now surprises with an additional commitment. According to information from the Daily Mirrors Background Mobility & Transport from group circles, Munich is at the center of a second consortium, which is seeking millions of funding from the Federal Ministry of Economy to build a battery cell production in this country. "We're in," it said. In January, the BMW Management Board wanted to finalise the project.
It is noteworthy that BMW is already involved in the first so-called IPCEI project. With the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), the EU Commission enables member countries to benefit from billions in funding of technologies of strategic importance. In the specific case, it is a question of producing battery cells for electric cars and other applications in Europe. The Federal Ministry of Economy (BMWi) will promote battery cell production with at least one billion euros.
A company may participate in both IPCEI consortia if different projects are involved. That's not a problem with BMW. According to its own data, the car group invests 200 million euros in a "competence centre battery cell", where cells "next generation" are developed. This is complex enough and concerns, among other things, the improvement of energy density, durability and loading properties.
